Update on SB 129 – Optometric Surgery Legislation

The Ohio legislature recessed for the summer at the end of June. There was no additional activity on SB 129 after the OOS and OSMA testified in opposition to the bill in front of the Senate Health Committee on June 12. We sent out a member alert after opposition testimony.

OOS Comments Submitted for Proposed LCD — Botulinum Toxin Injections

OOS submitted the following letter of comments on CGS’ draft local coverage determination (LCD) DL 39857 — Botulinum Toxin Injections. "We write to share our concerns that the proposed LCD will restrict patient access to proven, medically necessary care by arbitrarily restricting the dosage amounts, number of injections, and injection sites to be less than the longstanding standard of care for treatment of blepharospasm..."

New Medicare G codes and their role in Ophthalmology Care in 2024

Medicare has created additional codes to support the clinical work provided to patients with a variety of issues from assessment of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) to a complexity add on code and caregiver training care that may be appropriate in the Ophthalmology setting.

SB 129: Optometric Surgery Legislation Update

As we reported in the summer, SB 129 was introduced that would dramatically expand the scope of practice of optometrist in Ohio including laser and other surgical procedures. We have developed a one-page overview that outlines the specific provisions of the bill and how you can participate.

Using Health Surveillance Data to Assess Barriers to Vision Care in Ohio

As part of a pilot project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, Ohio State University, the Ohio Department of Aging, and the Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness began working on a collaborative project, using population health surveillance data to identify important barriers to vision care utilization.
