Reflections from OSMA Summer Scholar, Shannon:"In order to attend medical school, I rely on scholarships and financial aid to cover my tuition and cost of living. During the summer months, I am unable to rely on these funds, so I needed to attain a part-time position to work outside of my internship. Receiving the support of the Summer Scholars stipend meant that I could devote more time to my project with Mount Carmel, researching and shadowing full-time rather than part-time. This past summer I had the pleasure of working with Mount Carmel Health System on retrospective study investigating the effects of trauma during pregnancy on maternal and fetal outcomes. Most of my role focused on performing chart review, and I was able to learn so much more about obstetrical and emergency care through the patients’ experiences. I also had the opportunity to draft my first professional abstract and receive feedback and guidance for future projects. I coordinated with the Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine and worked closely with Dr. Wanjiku Kabiru, Dr. Cameron Rink, and Ann Salvator–all of whom I am grateful for their mentorship and encouragement throughout the project. In addition to the research team, I’d like to thank MFM physicians Dr. Britton Rink and Dr. Jeffery Johnson who allowed me to shadow them and connect what I was learning through research with in-person patient experiences. Finally, thank you to the Ohio State Medical Association for allowing me to pursue research and learn more about the field I hope to specialize in after medical school." |
