The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is seeking a Physician Assistant to participate in the surgical care of patients with cardiac defects including outpatient evaluation and follow-up, and assisting in the operating room and hybrid catheterization lab as well as with postoperative inpatient management.

Key Responsibilities: Medical Care

Assist with surgical procedures in the operating room, hybrid catheritization suite, cardiac intensive care unit or stepdown cardiac unit. Perform comprehensive pre-operative patient history and physical examinations. Make daily inpatient rounds with the cardiothoracic surgical team. Assist in postoperative care of patients in the inpatient setting. Perform patient related duties as indicated and assigned by the CT surgery Faculty. May initiate, request and/or perform routine laboratory, radiological and diagnostic studies as indicated and directed by the surgeon. In corporation with the physician develop and implement treatment plans for patients.

Prescriptive Authority

Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic/non-pharmacological agents and interventions that are both universal and unique to the patient, and monitors/evaluates effects.

Research

May participate in implementation and data collection related to clinical research studies. Participate in maintaining the clinical database. Participate in implementation and data collection related to clinical research studies. Participate in maintaining the Cardiac Intraoperative Events database and the Surgical Site Infections database

Education/Work Experience:

Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the State of Ohio Medical Board which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and certification by the NCCPA. Two years experience. Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies and previous pediatric experience with emphasis in cardiac care and/or cardiothoracic surgery are preferred.
