Physician Assistant - Surgical

  Job Summary:
Delivers direct patient care in collaboration with a physician that includes identification, management and/or referral of health problems. Promotes consumer, family, or community health through preventative health care actions and through patient advocacy. Manages complex illnesses and delivers specialty care. Functions in a supportive role to provide optimum care to surgical patients. Duties encompass the pre-, intra- and post-operative phases. Upholds the standards of the system-wide customer service program.

Responsibilities:

Contributes to patient safety by:
a. Providing a safe environment for patients.
b. Reporting safety concerns, errors and near misses.
c. Participating in system improvement initiatives to prevent errors.
d. Providing evidence-based care as applicable to the role.

1. Clinical Practice
a. Collects data relative to the physical, psychological, developmental, and occupational status of individuals and families through health history and physical assessment.
b. Prioritizes patient assessment based on patient needs, existing signs and systems and current patient data. Anticipates the subtle signs and symptoms of potential problems when gathering data.
c. Develops an individual plan of care for primary patients in collaboration with consulting physician that is relative to identified problem.
d. Evaluates outcomes of care delivered to the patient and changes plan of care accordingly in consultation with family and pertinent health care providers.
e. Provides counseling, health teaching, and support to patients and families.
f. Plans for continuity of care, identifies community health resources and guides patients and families in their use.
g. Identifies significant aspects of family situation and appraises family's ability to meet health needs.
h. Institutes measures to maintain and promote health and to prevent illness or recurrence of illness and disability.
i. Selects appropriate communication approach to achieve desired outcomes; identifies subtle barriers to communication; initiates appropriate interaction and evaluates results.
j. Delivers health care in complex patient care situations while maintaining a high standard of clinical practice in a cost-effective manner.
k. Uses a creative approach to patient education; develops patient education plans and materials for specific patient populations.
l. Acts as a consultant within practice setting and community.

2. Surgical Care
a. Maintains knowledge of surgical anatomy and physiology to perform duties as Operating Room First Assist.
b. Performs sterile technique and aseptic practices; scrubs, gowns, and gloves for assigned cases.
c. Prepares for and participates in surgical procedures to be performed as well as surgical instrumentation accompanying each procedure
d. Performs patient history and physical.
e. Assists in transportation of patients between departments.
f. Handles specimens appropriately.
g. Performs pre-operative shaving and other prepping of operative site. Positions and drapes patient as appropriate to surgical procedure.
h. Performs hemostasis by proper use of pressure, clamps, ties, suture ligatures, clips, or electrocautery according to the surgeon’s preference.
i. Provides and maintains the proper exposure necessary to perform the operative procedure while protecting vital organs, tissue and other structures.
j. Properly closes the skin in smooth and efficient manner according to the surgeon’s preference.
k. Applies the appropriate dressing for the procedure according to the surgeon’s preference.
l. Follows the pace set by the surgeon, participates in the procedure to maintain a smooth and efficient flow of the operation.

3. Coordination of Care
a. Consults with other professionals for joint problem solving and setting of mutual goals related to patient care issues.
b. Functions as a resource for students and physicians in training for clinical practice issues.
c. Acts as a liaison between physicians, patients, families, and community resources.

4. Leadership/Organizational Skills
a. Assumes accountability for primary patients by representing patients' needs to others.
b. Takes charge of individual practice by assuming accountability, making decisions proactively, responding to changing needs of patients/families using creativity and problem solving skills.
c. Participates in setting unit/department goals and working toward their achievement; communicates unit-based issues and concerns in an appropriate forum.
d. Initiates the development and/or revision of practice standards and guidelines appropriate to the unit/department.
e. Schedules self and patients according to departmental/divisional and patient needs.
f. Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and serves as a resource and/or preceptor for students from various disciplines, and new personnel.
g. Serves on committees and participates in activities within the department/division as experiences are available.
h. Presents formal educational programs.
i. Designs innovative practice models related to Physician Assistant's practice and patient care.

5. Professional Development
a. Identifies own learning needs. Sets learning goals, and actively pursues required knowledge and skills.
b. Evaluates own professional practice utilizing self, collaborative physicians and administrative evaluations.
c. Participates in performance improvement activities; recommends action plans that impact patient care outcomes.
d. Participates in the identification and performance of research projects; evaluates and analyzes research that is available in the literature for possible integration into daily practice.

6. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Required:
Graduate of an accredited Physician's Assistant program
Current licensure in the State of Ohio
Graduate of an approved formal training program for Surgical Assisting or appropriate related certification from an approved military Surgical Assisting Program
Knowledgeable in the use of sterile technique and aseptic practices
Knowledgeable regarding medications used in an Outpatient Surgical Environment
Demonstrated knowledge of suture material and different types of skin stitches
Ability to prioritize work assignments and maintain flexibility in a fact-paced environment
Must meet the requirements/qualifications for clinical privileges with The MetroHealth System within 90 days of placement within position, and must maintain privileges)
Preferred:
One year of surgical assisting experience
