Retired Pharmacists Committee Meeting

Ohio Historical Society, 800 E 17th Ave, Columbus, OH 43211

Dear OPA Retired Pharmacist members,

Our next meeting on the OPA Retired Pharmacists Committee will be Wednesday, August 13 at 1:00 PM. We will be breaking tradition for this meeting and taking a bit of a field trip! For the August 13 meeting, we'll be visiting the Ohio Village at the Ohio Historical Society.

Located at 800 E 17th Ave in Columbus, it's right off the 17th Ave exit on I-71. Here's directions from the OPA office: http://goo.gl/maps/gNPu0. To get directions from your location, just insert your address.

Ohio Village is a living history museum in Columbus operated by the Ohio Historical Society.

Ohio Village PharmacyThe village, intended to provide a firsthand view of life in Ohio during the American Civil War, opened July 27, 1974 on 15 acres adjacent to the Ohio Historical Center in north Columbus. The 22 buildings that make up the village are a mixture of reproductions and historic structures moved to the site. Among those currently standing are the Town Hall, Print Shop, General Store and Masonic Lodge, Education Center, Blacksmith Shop, Tinsmith Shop, Broom and Basket Shop, Cabinetmaker/Undertaker's Shop, Harnessmaker's and Weaver's shops, Ladies' Soldiers Aid Society, Village Bakery, Market House, Livery Stable, Schoolhouse, Doctor's Office and Residence, the Ohio Village Bank, the Colonel Crawford Inn, the Elk's Head Tavern and the vintage Pharmacy!

The pharmacy is one of the newer buildings in the Village, which opened in 1980,
taking the place of the museum that occupied the area since the Village opened in 1974.

The pharmacy became a reality through the conscientious efforts of the Pharmacists of Ohio, which included the past Ohio State Board of Pharmacy members, OPA members, and Dr. Bob Buerki. The highlights of the Pharmacy include antique show globes hanging in front windows, beautiful mahogany cabinets, a vintage suppository machine, and large collections of apothecary bottles, liquids (narrow neck), & powders roots (wide mouth) with labels under glass. There is also a large collection of patient medicines with fascinating labels. And best of all, OPA retired member Alan Katz, will be giving us a tour of the village!

We will be meeting at the Village at 1:00 PM. Visitors enter through the Ohio History Center museum and then follow the signs to the Village.

This cost for the event is a senior-rate ticket of $9.

For those interested in eating lunch beforehand, our Retired Pharmacist Committee Chair Wayne Miller will have an informal gathering for lunch at the Bob Evans at 3140 Olentangy River Rd in Columbus. For directions, visit: https://goo.gl/maps/Ngw6G. We'll meet there at 11:30 AM, grab a bite, and then head over to the Ohio Village before 1:00 PM.

This is a great opportunity to visit a great monument to Ohio Pharmacy history and to get together with friends and former colleagues. We'd love to see you there!

As portions of the exhibit are outdoors, please dress appropriately for the weather.

Please RSVP to Antonio Ciaccia at aciaccia@ohiopharmacists.org by Monday, August 11 at the latest to let us know if we should expect you. Space will be limited. We look forward to seeing you on August 13!
