Job description:
The Manager, Ambulatory Pharmacy Services directs all aspects of the pharmacy’s ambulatory operations. The individual in this position leads pharmacists and pharmacy technicians assigned to the ambulatory areas and works to ensure that all patients’ needs for pharmaceutical services, both clinical and distributive, are met. Activities include clinical pharmacy services development, personnel management, policy and procedure development, performance evaluation coordination and service problem identification and resolution. The Manager develops and implements programs to monitor and evaluate the quality of services provided; assures compliance with practice standards; and develops and implements the Department’s goals. Patient population includes neonatal, pediatric, and select adult patients. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Responsibilities:
• Provides leadership to the ambulatory pharmacy team. Serves as a leader in departmental and organizational medication safety initiatives, leading pharmacy safety coaches to support hospital goals.

• Leads pharmacy services for the Partners For Kids (PFK) patient population.

• Develops and leads Specialty Pharmacy services.

• Maintains and grows patient discharge prescription delivery services, as appropriate.

• Works with the Finance and Accounting Departments to develop ambulatory pharmacy services budget in consultation with Director, Pharmacy Services; monitors financial performance of responsible areas and works to establish corrective fiscal plans when necessary.

• Develops and participates in projects designed to minimize cost and maximize efficiency. Establishes operational performance standards, monitoring and initiating performance improvement when indicated, such as in dispensing accuracy, turnaround time, etc.

• Develops annual and long-range goals and objectives for the Pharmacy Department in conjunction with the pharmacy leadership team.

• Ensures quality monitoring and compliance with state and federal laws, The Joint Commission standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, and hospital infection control policies governing pharmacy practice. Prepares areas of responsibility for Joint Commission surveys.

• In collaboration with Payor Relations, reviews and negotiates contracts and markets services to maintain or increase visibility and business.

• Coordinates the outpatient pharmacy intern program with the outpatient staff and community care resident.

• Serves as a member of various interdisciplinary teams/committees as necessary.

• Serves as a preceptor to residents taking an ambulatory pharmacy services rotation in management.

• Adjusts workflow and staff as necessary to cover absences.

• Assumes preparation of the pharmacist and pharmacy technician work schedules or delegates and supervises appropriately; approves paid time off and schedule switch requests. Manages the use of overtime.

• Completes the bi-weekly time and attendance records for the staff or delegates and supervises appropriately.

• Coordinates performance evaluations for the staff pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, outpatient billing specialist, and ambulatory clinical pharmacists, ensuring completion in a timely manner.

• Collaborates with the Director, Pharmacy Services regarding hiring and, as necessary, termination decisions. Coordinates recruitment, interviewing and selection of new applicants for staff pharmacist, pharmacy technician, pharmacy intern, outpatient billing specialist, and ambulatory clinic pharmacist positions; coordinates orientation and training.

• Assures environmental cleanliness for ambulatory pharmacy areas.

• Maintains a customer service orientation and identifies and resolves ambulatory pharmacy service problems.

• Develops, implements and maintains relevant policies and procedures for the area of responsibility.

Other information:
KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

• Doctor of Pharmacy (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.

• Master’s degree (MS, MBA, MHA, et al) and/or completion of a pharmacy residency program preferred.

• Three years of experience as a pharmacy manager or coordinator (pediatrics preferred).

• Demonstration of comprehensive knowledge of ambulatory clinical and operations workflows, business development, and data analysis.

• Demonstration of strong clinical and managerial skills.

• License to practice pharmacy in Ohio.

• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate staff and to communicate effectively.

• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

• The ability to evaluate current methods of delivering service; plan improvement; and communicate and execute change.
