OHIO LICENSING APNíS TO PRESCRIBE!

OHIO LICENSING APNíS TO PRESCRIBE!

The Ohio Board of Nursing is licensing Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) to prescribe. An APN must have a special prescribing license in addition to their APN license from the Board of Nursing. Prescriptions can be issued by an APN in the same fashion as a physician such as fax, oral, or handwritten prescriptions. The APN is limited to the same restrictions as the physician they are working with. Therefore, if the physician is a dentist, the APN cannot prescribe outside the limits of a dentist. APNs prescribing controlled substances will be issued a DEA number that starts with M, unlike the physiciansí DEA number which start with A or B. APNs cannot write for CII prescriptions unless it is for a one-time 24-hour period for a terminally ill patient. Methylphenidate, Adderall, and any other CII stimulants can never be prescribed by an APN. An APN can supply their patients with a 72-hour supply of samples, as long as they are non-controlled substances. The Board of Nursing requires that all prescriptions written by an APN must have their prescribing number on it, otherwise the prescription is not valid. For more information regarding APNs prescribing or to verify an APNs license please refer to the Ohio State Board of Nursingís website at http://www.state.oh.us/nur/AdvPractice.htm.
For a complete formulary list from which APNs can prescribe refer to http://www.state.oh.us/nur/pdfs/formcpg.pdf. Operational definitions to interpret the table are included.
