Pharmacy Legislative Day

October 28, 2009
Riffe Center, 77 South High Street, Columbus

Presented by: the Ohio Pharmacists Association and
the
Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists

Thanks to everyone who traveled to Columbus for 2009 Pharmacy Legislative Day, sponsored by OPA and the Ohio Society of Health-System Pharmacists. You made it a huge success. Pharmacy issues are on the front burner right now, and it was important for the legislature to know that our members are informed and involved.

The theme for this year's program was Legislation in Ohio and Washington DC and How YOU Can Impact it All. The goals were to get involved, know your legislators, and make sure your legislators know you; and to communicate the value of pharmacy to state legislators. In addition, Ohio pharmacists and student pharmacists had the opportunity to showcase pharmacy services to Ohio legislators. Students and faculty from Ohio Northern University's Raabe College of Pharmacy set up an informational table to offer counseling on proper treatment of specific types of heartburn. Students from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy offered blood glucose and blood pressure screenings. They distributed information on flu vaccines, household poisons and medication safety for kids.

At the CE session, OPA Executive Director Ernest Boyd started off the day by giving an in-depth update on federal health reform, including the pharmacy provisions included in each bill. Mark Keeley, Legislative Affairs Administrator for the Board of Pharmacy, discussed legislation being followed by the Board of Pharmacy, as well as an update on recent Board rules affecting pharmacist-administered immunizations and pharmacy technicians. Pharmacists also heard from Senator Kevin Coughlin, Chairman of the Senate Health Committee, who spoke about his role as Health Committee chairman and current legislation in his committee.

Representative Dave Burke, the only pharmacist member of the General Assembly, spoke about his experience so far in the legislature, including his work on the Health Committee and the pharmacy bills that are of particular interest to him.

Following the CE session, the pharmacists were able to attend a House Health Committee hearing and observe the legislative process in person. A legislative reception followed where pharmacists had the opportunity to meet one-on-one with their representatives and senators to discuss relevant pharmacy issues.

At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
