Dr. Meera Patel is a native Texan who grew up in Sugar Land, a suburb of Houston, Texas. Her interest in medicine began in high school while volunteering at the local hospital during the summers. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition with a minor in business from The University of Texas at Austin. With public health as the center of her focus, she went to the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she received a Masters of Health Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with a concentration in Cancer Biology. She completed her thesis on The Mechanism of Secondary Malignancies Induced by Cisplatin which is where her love for oncology began. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 2015. She returned back to Texas where she completed her internal medicine residency at The University of Texas at Houston, while she served on the House Staff Senate. Oncology was able to combine her love of science on the molecular level with the privilege of a unique patient-physician relationship. She joined the NCI designated hematology and oncology fellow at Karmanos Cancer Institute. As a fellow, she has been involved in lung and prostate cancer research. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her fiancé and family. She is a diehard Texas Longhorn football fan and tries not to miss a game during the season. She is also creatively talented and enjoys arts and crafts along with making personalized gifts. She hopes to practice in the academic setting after graduation.
