October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

domestic violence awareness month octoberFrom July 1, 2022- June 30, 2023, Ohio saw 112 fatalities in 82 cases resulting from domestic violence (Ohio Domestic Violence Network).

Domestic Violence (DV) is any violence that takes place within a household and typically occurs between romantic partners (also referred to as Intimate Partner Violence), parent and child, siblings or roommates. DV encompasses a range of abusive behaviors that may include physical violence, emotional abuse, psychological manipulation, sexual assault, and economic control. This problem is not confined to any single demographic; it transcends race, age, gender, and socioeconomic status, affecting individuals in all walks of life.

The impacts of DV are profound, affecting not only the victims but also children, families, and communities. Awareness is the first step in combating DV and many individuals may not recognize the signs of abuse or may feel isolated and unsure about seeking help. By educating ourselves and others about DV, we can help create an environment where victims feel safe to speak out. Support is crucial for survivors of DV.  Resources such as hotlines, shelters, and counseling services are vital in providing immediate assistance and long-term support.

OAPA would like to put the spotlight on one of Ohio’s resources for DV survivors. Turning Point offers free, confidential and non-discriminatory services to any resident(s) experiencing DV in Crawford, Delaware, Marion, Morrow, Union and Wyandot counties. In the 2022-2023 program year, they served 5,000 survivors. Turning Point offers more than just shelter including food, transportation, education and support, victim rights advocacy, transitional housing, community education and outreach programs, teen advocacy, support groups, children’s programs, and pet accommodations. Turning Point provides shelter accommodation in a safe atmosphere in Marion and Delaware counties and has a 24-hour crisis line that can be reached at 1-800-232-6505.

OAPA recognizes that our members are not immune to DV and may need personal support. As part of our ongoing commitment to PA wellness, the following resources can be found on the OAPA website
