Member Feature: Catching up with Meghan Stubbs, PA-S
OAPA celebrates its members from across the state and in all areas of practice and career stages.
This month we are featuring Meghan Stubbs, PA-S, a student in the Cedarville University PA Program. We find out how her personal health journey impacted her career choice, what advice she'd give to pre-PA students, and how she likes to spend what little free time she has!
Why did you choose to pursue a career as a PA?
I chose to pursue becoming a PA because of my own personal journey battling many chronic illnesses that profoundly shaped my perspective on healthcare. I have grown up in medical offices and experienced firsthand how PAs truly went above and beyond to make sure I had the best care possible. The PAs I saw never gave up on me as a patient despite being a challenging case and inspired me to follow in their footsteps. I aspire to become a provider who will use their own experiences to connect with and advocate for challenging patient cases, just as my PAs did for me.
What do you wish you had known about PA school before you started?
I wish I had understood that just because you are in PA school doesn’t mean your entire life is over. I have seen many students say their life was put on pause but this just hasn’t been the case for me. I think if you prioritize your time well and learn how to do things efficiently, you can still do the things you love and can avoid burnout.
What has been the most rewarding part of PA school?
Watching myself change in so many different aspects including spiritually, emotionally and intellectually has been amazing to see. I think the most rewarding part will be seeing how much information I have learned when applying it when I start clinicals in May 2025. The lifelong friendships I have formed from PA school is also one of my top most rewarding parts of PA school. We are constantly motivating each other to be the best versions of ourselves!
What advice would you give to someone considering PA school?
Keep putting in the work and stay motivated! The odds can feel discouraging but it isn’t impossible and your passion will always shine through. Build strong relationships with mentors and learn how to manage your time well. Don’t be afraid to ask for help along your journey!
Why are you an OAPA member?
It is important to stay connected to the PA community, especially as a student, as we should be knowledgeable about the profession's legislative changes and different education opportunities. OAPA sends newsletters that summarize events they’re hosting and changes in state legislature that have helped provide so much insight for me. Additionally, they have provided opportunities to network with other PAs and PA students through different events that can be beneficial to my future career.
How do you like to spend your time when you aren't studying or working?
I love being creative by creating TikTok videos, which has become a fun way to share my experience with chronic illnesses and as a PA student. I have been able to connect with so many people there from different walks of life! I also enjoy movie nights with my classmates and exploring the local Metro Parks in Columbus to unwind and recharge.
