Berlin Township

Berlin Township is accepting applications for the position of Fire Chief. Berlin Township is located in Delaware County, Ohio, United States, with 9,400 residents. Situated 5.5 miles north of the Columbus City limits and spanning 22.5 square miles, Berlin Township is family-centric and contains commercial, farm, and residential properties with a rapidly expanding community. Berlin Township Fire Department currently has full-time personnel in addition to part-time and volunteer personnel. The department is a full-service agency that provides emergency response, fire safety education, inspections, suppression, investigations, emergency medical support, disaster response, hazardous materials mitigation, services, and community outreach. The department partners with Delaware County EMS, which provides 24/7 paramedic services at no additional cost to our residents. The Fire Chief reports directly to the Board of Trustees through the Appointed Board Liaison and is expected to be highly visible and active in the community. The Township is seeking a candidate to serve as a visionary leader with exceptional character and integrity, proven leadership and management skills, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop strong working relationships. Successful applicants will have a broad background in all aspects of service delivery, including suppression, EMS, prevention, and inspection, and possess astute financial management skills.

Applicants should have a proven record of leadership with a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible full-time fire service experience, with five (5) or more years of management responsibility at minimum as a Lieutenant, preferably as a Training Officer, Battalion or Assistant Fire Chief, Shift Officer, or an equivalent combination assignment as a command officer in a comparable size municipal or combination fire department.

Applicants must possess the following Ohio certifications: Firefighter Level I & II, EMT-B, fire or EMS instructor, and a valid Ohio Driver’s License. A bachelor’s degree is preferred in fire science, public administration, or equivalent in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Public Safety Management, Business Administration, or a related field is desired. Completion of Fire Officers Training, Incident Command, Fire Service Management, and related courses is required. The successful applicant must have the ability to pass all pre-employment screenings, including physical examination and drug testing, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and adhere to the Berlin Township tobacco policy. This is a full-time position, and the salary range depends on qualifications and experience.
