Long-Acting Injectable Protocols
The Ohio Pharmacists Foundation has created draft protocols for pharmacists who plan to administer long-acting injectable (LAI) medications as permitted by section 4729.45 of the Ohio Revised Code and rule 4729-5-40 of the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC). These protocols have been drafted for your convenience in working with a physician for your long-acting injectables program. Each protocol must be established by a physician who has a scope of practice that includes treatment of the condition for which the individual has been prescribed the drug to be administered.
The package includes draft protocols for pharmacist administration of the following:
- An opioid antagonist (e.g., naltrexone) used for treatment of drug addiction or for the treatment of alcohol dependence in accordance with approved labeling by the United States food and drug administration.
- An antipsychotic drug administered in a long-acting or extended-release form.
- Hydroxyprogesterone caproate for pregnant women.
- Medroxyprogesterone acetate for non-pregnant women.
- Cobalamin (including the administration of cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin or any other FDA-approved B12 injection)
