How did you get interested in the profession of pharmacy?

My father is a Pharmacist and my mother was a Nurse. With this being the reality, I have always been around healthcare. However, I was never pushed into either profession by my parents. I did shadow them when I was younger and got to see what each of them did. I always seemed to have a passion to help others. Whether it was something as simple as helping them cut their grass or babysit their children, to giving up weekdays or weekends to help them run events, I was always willing and excited to give my time. Pharmacy, to me, evolved as the best way to marry my desire to help others and the need for this help.

Why did you choose OPA as a rotation site?

I chose OPA as a rotation site because of my interest in administrative roles and advocacy for one’s profession, in this case, Pharmacy. I serve on OSHP’s Professional Affairs Division, the Council for Ohio Health Care Advocacy (COHCA) and APhA – ASP. I felt that a rotation at OPA would allow me to build and/or strengthen my leadership skills and legislative knowledge-base, while allowing me to advocate for the profession of Pharmacy.

What was the most significant or surprising experience at OPA?

My most significant experience at OPA occurred when I was downtown at the Ohio Statehouse and Ohio State Board of Pharmacy meetings. I spent several days down at the Statehouse where I was able to experience many legislative actions that are performed daily. It was important and valuable to see how the laws and rules that govern the profession of Pharmacy and everyday life are reviewed, implemented and enforced. It was also very valuable to be refreshed on just how much work and the kind of processes it takes for legislature to become these laws and rules.
