Veterans/TRICARE
Veterans
The men and women of our Armed Forces make incredible sacrifices in service to our country, and the natural, drug- and surgery-free approach of chiropractic care can be especially beneficial to active-duty military and Veterans. The MAC’s Veterans Task Force has assembled several resources to help you navigate the VA Health System and care for your community’s veterans.
Veterans Affairs (VA) Community Care Network (CCN)
The VA MISSION Act went into effect on June 6th, 2019, aiming to improve Veterans' access to health care in VA facilities and the community. This VA reform law has several components, including the implementation of the Community Care Network (CCN). The CCN enables eligible Veterans to receive care in the community when certain services are not available or accessible at a VA medical center.
In early 2020, all five of Michigan’s VA Medical Centers (Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Detroit, Iron Mountain, and Saginaw) transitioned away from TriWest and to Optum Health for the administration of the VA’s Community Care Network.
Join the Network
If you are interested in serving Veterans in your local area, you must join the VA Community Care Network. To join, call CCN Provider Services for Region 2 at (844) 839-6108 from 8 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.
If you have previously cared for Veterans through TriWest/EmpowerChiro, you need to initiate a new contract with the CCN through Optum. You will not receive authorizations from the VA without joining the Optum VA CCN network.
A provider may choose to enroll specifically with the Optum VA CCN network and not all commercial Optum/United Health Care networks.
VA CCN Referral Process
- VA Medical Center (VAMC) determines Veteran’s need and eligibility for care in the community.
- VAMC contacts the VA CCN provider to confirm they will accept the referral and schedule an appointment.
- A referral packet, including authorization, is sent to the VA CCN provider. The authorization includes medically necessary services included in a Standardized Episode of Care (SEOC).
- The Veteran is seen by a VA CCN provider for medically necessary services.
- Provider sends medical record to VAMC.
- Provider bills Optum for the care.
- If additional services are required, provider submits a Request for Services (RFS) form to VA.

TRICARE
TRICARE is the health care program for uniformed service members, retirees, and their families around the world. While the Department of Defense health system covers chiropractic care for Active Duty military personnel, activated National Guard troops, and Reserve members, at this time, unfortunately, TRICARE does not cover chiropractic care. For more information, see TRICARE and Chiropractic.
However, TRICARE is moving in the direction of covering chiropractic. For more information, see these articles in Dynamic Chiropractic, American Military News, and Military.com. Stay tuned!

Licensure/CE Requirements
More than 75 percent of Michigan’s doctors of chiropractic belong to the MAC, one of the largest unified state associations in the nation. The MAC strives to protect and enhance the chiropractic profession through organized leadership, education, and the promotion of the chiropractic discipline and practice.
Through our advocacy for doctors of chiropractic, their patients, and the profession as a whole, the MAC provides Michigan’s chiropractic community with a strong voice in state government, innovative legal strategies to end discrimination against chiropractic, and all the tools needed to run a successful chiropractic practice in the 21st Century.
If you are not already a member of the MAC, please join today! The benefits are numerous, and we all speak louder when we speak with one unified voice!
License Requirements
The current Administrative Rules require that doctors obtain 30 hours of continuing education over the two-year licensure period for license renewal, 15 of which may be completed on-line unless noted. These 30 hours must include:
- Two hours in physical measures
- Two hours in the performance and ordering of tests
- One hour in ethics
- One hour in sexual boundaries
- One hour in pain and symptom management
Each license period you must also receive two (2) hours of Implicit Bias training. This is in addition to the 30 CEs required.
You must also have completed your Human Trafficking training. This is a one-time only requirement and not needed for every license renewal.
Relicensure
The State of Michigan recently updated the Michigan Board of Chiropractic's Administrative Rules. One of the areas that changed in the new Rules governs relicensure. For more information, contact the MAC's Lisa Love-Smith (lisa@chiromi.com) or Tim Gaughan (tim@chiromi.com). Lisa and Tim can also be reached by phone at the MAC office at (517) 367-2225.
Filing Cabinet
As a benefit to our members, the MAC maintains a record of ALL continuing education courses you have taken with us. These records are kept in a secure location and receives daily backups on a secure server offsite. If you would like us to store other CE courses from outside organizations, please contact Stephanie at 517.367.2225 or email stephanie@chiromi.com.

Legislative Action Center
>>2018 Grassroots Action Questionnaire<<
While not quite the “Blue Wave” that some pundits had predicted, Michigan Democrats had reason to be happy on November 6, 2018, as they managed to re-take the governor’s mansion for the first time in eight years, pick up seats in both chambers of the Michigan Legislature, flip two Republican seats in Congress from red to blue, and pick up a seat on the Michigan Supreme Court. The 100th Michigan Legislature, which began January 1, 2019, has seen a tremendous amount of change, with new leadership in three of the four legislative caucuses, 30 new members in the Michigan Senate, and dozens of new representatives in the Michigan House. With all this new blood, it remains essential that we develop relationships with the newcomers while strengthening those we have with returning lawmakers.
The MAC Grassroots Action Project
MAC staff has compiled a comprehensive listing of each of Michigan’s 14 Congressional districts, 38 Michigan Senate districts, and 110 Michigan House of Representatives districts, broken down by MAC district. Each legislative district also outlines exactly which communities (counties, cities, townships, etc.) are contained within its borders, as well as that district’s senator or representative. During election years, the documents will contain candidates for each office from the major parties (Democratic, Republican, and in some districts Libertarian), as well as historical data on the district’s political “base,” determined by past legislative and presidential voting results.
This project gives us an opportunity to determine which lawmakers (and races in election years) will have the greatest direct effect on passage of our legislative agenda (or control of the legislature) and potentially the future of chiropractic in the state and our members.
Election Resources:
UPDATED: 2/5/2019. These files were updated after the new Michigan Legislature and Congress convened in January. Updates include 2018 election winners, committee assignments, analysis, and more!

Scope of Practice
Scope of Practice
Michigan’s Chiropractic Scope of Practice
In January 2010, after a 30-year fight, our new chiropractic scope of practice became law. The new law brought our scope – previously the most restrictive in the nation – into line with the rest of the United States and now appropriately reflects the education and training a chiropractor completes to become licensed. For more information on Michigan’s chiropractic scope of practice, plus additional information relevant to a practicing doctor of chiropractic, see below:
