Speed Limit Setting: Current Policies, Recent Research and Effective Strategies for Traffic Calming

As people-centered mobility is being furthered in transportation planning, communities are asking MDOT to make roadways more multimodal-user friendly, which can include reducing one lane in each direction. Transit agencies are working on their future visions, which for BRT corridors, could also include a general-purpose lane reduction to provide for a dedicated transit lane for bus rapid transit (BRT). Several communities are collaborating with MDOT on corridor planning projects to redesign existing roadways to address traffic, safety, and land use changes to calm traffic. The re-envisioned roadways are looking at a lane reduction for transit or pedestrian amenities. To calm traffic, a big issue is the establishment of speed limits. This session will discuss legislative issues, learn from research and other parts of the country, as well as working with police to set speed limits for redesigned roadways.
