Attendees for this program will be introduced to the mechanisms of action and the benefits of light/laser therapy, aka Photobiomodulation (PBM), specifically for pain control and nerve and tissue healing for conditions commonly encountered in the chiropractic office. Proper evaluation techniques and tests to determine treatment efficacy will be reviewed. National grad Dr. Wendy Varish is a Diplomate of the Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedists (DACO), a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, a Certified Chiropractic Occupational Health Consultant, and a Medicare Compliance Specialist-Provider (MCS-P). She has been accepted by the International Academy of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine as a Fellow and has advanced training and is certified in Manipulation Under Anesthesia and dry needling. She is a national speaker and teaches multiple continuing education courses for doctors, PTs, and staff, with topics ranging from physiological therapeutics, light therapy / Photobiomodulation, rehab, anatomy, radiology, nutrition, and clinical conditions and issues. She is also an instructor for Wisconsin’s Chiropractic Technician and Chiropractic Radiological Technician certification courses. She is a member of several volunteer organizations, and her past leadership roles include Past-President and Board of Director of the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association. Additionally, she has served on the Documentation and Protocol committees for the WCA and is a Past-President of the Wisconsin Back Society. In 2021, she was named the WCA’s Wisconsin Chiropractor of the Year. She has special interests in family care, sports injuries, work injuries, nutrition, and pediatrics. She uses a variety of techniques specific for the patient, including Diversified, Gonstead, Activator, and Thompson. Depending upon the needs of the individual patient, Dr. Varish will include rehab and therapeutic exercise, nutritional counseling, dry needling, traction, and even work with the Protec Spine Floating Manipulation Therapy unit. Other organizations that Dr. Varish has been involved in include the Council on Pediatrics, the ACA, the American Board of Chiropractic Sports Physicians, and the Federation for Chiropractic Education and Research. When not in the office or on the road teaching, she enjoys spending time with her family and trying to fit in her other interests. She has completed several triathlons, marathons and half- marathons, century bike rides, and competes locally and nationally with her horses.
Dr. J. Chris Castel received his PhD in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Research at Showa University in Tokyo, Japan. His expertise is in the development, regulatory approval, and commercialization of therapeutic medical devices for physical medicine, rehabilitation, and wound healing. He has extensive experience in the medical device regulatory approval process with the FDA, national and international regulatory agencies, and he, along with a team of professional associations and industry leaders, oversaw the process and obtained positive national coverage determinations from CMS for Electrotherapy devices in wound healing and incontinence management. Having founded and successfully sold three medical device companies to major strategic partners, he established CareWear to develop patient-oriented therapeutic wearables that use breakthrough technologies such as printed light and ultrasonic substrates. CareWear was a 2018 SPIE Startup Challenge winner. Dr. Castel holds numerous patents and has published extensively. As an international lecturer, he has taught and presented at a post-graduate global level in such areas as Photobiomodulation, neurorehabilitation, pain management, and Ultrasonics. He was one of the first researchers during the 1980s to publish the effects of infrared and red light on collagen synthesis and has spent his career developing new technologies to treat pain and accelerate healing. He is a member of numerous societies and a Board Member of the North American Association for PhotoBioModulation. Dr. Castel was one the scientific program chairs for PBM 2021, the premiere global conference on Photobiomodulation.
