ChiroPractical Compliance and Risk Management for the Whole Team – Kathy Mills Chang
Risk Management and compliance take on many forms in this very highly regulated industry of healthcare. It’s estimated that 75% of chiropractic practices are non-compliant with HIPAA. Additionally, the eight fundamental elements of an effective compliance program are specifically mentioned in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as a “must have” for certain healthcare providers as a condition of participation in Medicare. A typical roadblock to a successful compliance program is appropriate and systematic implementation in the practice. This session will review the four most important Risk Management issues faced by a typical chiropractic office, and what to do to protect your practice and your patients.
- Increase knowledge and application of the guidance from the Office of Inspector General of the Department of Health and Human Services regarding the OIG Compliance Program for Individual and Small Group Physician Practices
- Learn to manage risk assignments and assign target dates to comply with federal requirements
- Better understand Audit Risk Factors that may be present
- Update your HIPAA program to control security events that may come up during everyday workflow
- Basic training on the components of the compliance program and how it should be applied to the practice
- Complete the assignment of a Compliance Officer for the practice
- Be able to evaluate Fee Schedule Risk Management
- Conduct and manage your required Risk Assessment for HIPAA on an annual basis

Kathy Mills Chang is Founder and CEO of KMC University. Between 1983 and 1999, Kathy built and managed multiple, high-volume chiropractic and multidisciplinary practices throughout the country and was responsible for all daily and financial operations management. Yvette Noel is Director of Education for KMC University. A Certified Professional Compliance Officer, she was born and raised in Ohio and began her career in healthcare right after high school, where she quickly made her way to office manager. Carl Alden is the Michigan Association of Chiropractors’ resident specialist on insurance. Most of his days are spent on the phone assisting MAC members with a variety of insurance issues. Along with these duties, Carl is also the MAC Governmental Relations Director. He is a graduate of Michigan State University.
Stephanie Davidson is the MAC’s coding specialist. She regularly speaks at MAC events regarding insurance issues. She is the author of the MAC’s CA Chat and the administrator of the MAC’s CA Advancement Program (CAAP). She is a graduate of Central Michigan University.
