The Better Business Bureau presents "Spot the Con: Training to Identify and Prevent Scams in the Funeral Industry," a specialized program tailored for funeral directors and their staff. This training enhances their ability to protect clients from scams during the sensitive times of making advance arrangements and after a loss. The program offers an in-depth understanding of various fraudulent schemes, practical prevention strategies, and effective client education techniques. By equipping the funeral industry with these tools, we aim to safeguard clients from financial and emotional exploitation.

Objectives:

  • Recognize Common Scams:
    • Identify prevalent scams targeting clients in the funeral industry, such as prepaid funeral/inclement weather scams, fake funeral homes, and bereavement scams.
    • Learn how to identify red flags and warning signs of scams, including high-pressure sales tactics, unsolicited offers, and suspicious payment requests.
    • Understand common scam techniques such as caller ID spoofing and fraudulent documentation.
  • Educate Clients:
    • Learn how to equip clients with knowledge about common scams and how to protect themselves, fostering a more informed and vigilant client base.
  • Utilize Reporting and Resources:
    • Understand the importance of reporting suspicious activities and accessing available resources for scam prevention and consumer protection.

As a FINRA-trained “Fraud Fighter” professional, Jessica holds a deep understanding of fraudulent schemes and effective strategies to combat them. With a passion for educating others, she has successfully conducted numerous training sessions to help professionals and consumers alike safeguard against fraud. Jessica is also an adjunct professor at Franklin University.
