Elizabeth Jane Schaffer, 94 years, of Oregon, Ohio and formerly of Defiance, Ohio, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, with her children by her side on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the Gardens of St. Francis, Oregon, Ohio, formerly the Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Home of the Aged, where she had made her home for the last 15 years, when she decided to move into the independent apartments, then to assisted living, and then to skilled care, making many friends with residents, and staff.
Betty was born on January 24, 1930, in Defiance, Ohio, to Karl and Johanna (Krugel) Bauer. At 2 years of age, Betty contracted polio, and at age 5, her father passed away. Being raised by her mother with the help of her older siblings, and extended family, Betty never let these hardships define her. She attended St. John Catholic Elementary School and was a graduate of the Defiance High School Class of 1950. At a local dance, she met the love of her life, and on September 15, 1951, she married, U.S. Marine, Clyde A. Schaffer. With this marriage, they were blessed with 6 children.
Betty a devout catholic and homemaker, along with Clyde, provided a home that was filled with love, a lot of laughter, which both, her and Clyde passed on to their children. In addition, they provided a home of discipline and the importance of faith; to always be kind, to help and give to others, and to be generous when you are able. Betty loved to play board games, entertaining family and friends with Saturday night card parties. She also instilled the importance and love of family, which was her true passion in life.
Betty is survived by her children, Vickie Farley, Louanne (Kevin) Shuman, Barb (Wayne) Davis, Larry (Jane) Schaffer, Dan (Cindy) Schaffer; grandchildren, Taylor III, Johanna, Mary Katherine, David, Nick, Chad, Eric, Elizabeth, Rachael, Lauren, DJ, Adam, and Hanna. Also surviving are several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
