What do you love most about Emergency Medicine?
I feel like working as an emergency physician, I am prepared to deal with anything that can walk through those doors. I like knowing that from ocular injuries to obstetric emergencies, I have the training to stabilize and manage their disease to improve the outcome in my patients lives. I get to advocate for my patients, regardless of who they are or where they come from. I think this is what makes our job challenging, but something that i can feel good about at the end of the day.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter the field of Emergency Medicine?
This is a profession that works harder than almost any other specialty while at work. You have to be prepared to work hard, but the rewards from it are worth it. This is also a field in which you have a wide variety of environments in which to practice your craft, which allows your career to be tailored to your interests.
What are some of the ways in which Ohio ACEP has supported you?
I was fortunate to have a mentor grab me while I was still in residency, post-night shift, to watch him discuss legislative issues with a state representative. It was through that encounter that I knew I wanted to be a part of the bigger solution of emergency medicine. Since then, I have been active in Ohio ACEP, and because of that have made many life-long friends, mentors and connections that have made my career very satisfying.
Advice to Colleagues
My advice to my colleagues, especially the newer ones, is to reach out to anyone you know that is involved in Ohio ACEP. If you don’t know someone, reach out to me! Ask to shadow one event or one meeting. Through that observation, you will find the enjoyment of being part of the solution to make our specialty better. Find an interest outside of clinical medicine, and try to devote 5% of your time to it, and you will find a whole new level of satisfaction from your career.
The Ohio ACEP Member Spotlight is a monthly showcase of an active member and their impact on the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
