What do you love most about Emergency Medicine?
No matter what walks through the door, we have the skill and knowledge to care for any patient at any time. In a world that is increasingly more specialized, I love being a generalist, who can problem-solve on the fly.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to enter the field of Emergency Medicine?
Shadow. There is no way to truly understand the specialty more than being in the thick of it. See a day, afternoon, and night shift, all which represent different vibes of emergency medicine. Visit not only a Level 1 Trauma, but also your local community or freestanding department. Emergency medicine is about so much more than the acuity seen on TV.
What are some of the ways in which Ohio ACEP has supported you?
I attended the Ohio ACEP Resident’s Assembly and the Midwest Medical Student Emergency Medicine Symposium, both of which helped me prepare for and understand the road ahead. The Oral Exam prep course was instrumental in my success passing boards; I couldn’t more highly recommend simulating the day before taking the test.
Do you have a favorite quote to share?
Regarding change management: There are two things that people hate – change and the way things are.
Fun Fact About You?
I love traveling for Ohio State football. I try to go to an away game every year, having traveled to: Washington, Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, and That Team Up North.
I am fortunate enough to teach the medical students and residents at my medical school alma mater. This really helps put into perspective the growth that occurs during medical training. I am also beyond lucky to be the proud husband to my wife, Kait, and to raise two (soon to be three) children, just 10 minutes from my childhood home.
The Ohio ACEP Member Spotlight is a monthly showcase of an active member and their impact on the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
