May 2022 Student Spotlight: Denise Randall

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree? Why your particular program?

It is my desire to become a licensed professional counselor. I began this journey in 2009 and received a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from a non-CACREP program. After leaving a 20-year career in Alabama State government, I returned to graduate school to pursue a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the CACREP accredited program at Troy University Montgomery. My ultimate goals are to serve my community a licensed career counselor who promotes diversity and cultural inclusion in the workplace.

Tell us about something you have learned/discovered during your program that surprised you. How do you think you will apply it professionally?

I am pleasantly surprised about the individualized care from my instructors. The faculty in the College of Education, Department of Counseling, Rehabilitation, and Interpreter Training at Troy University is the best in the state. Each instructor, advisor, and director are available to assist students throughout their academic journey and beyond. I did not receive this level of support in my prior counseling program, and I am grateful for the care and attention shown to me at Troy. The support and mentorship received in this program will benefit my clients as well as my counseling career.

What are you most proud of and why? Accomplishments?

I am most proud of my family and their love and support. I currently have a 4.0 GPA in my program, but more importantly I have a renewed passion for counseling.

Do you have any advice for others who may be interested in a similar graduate program?

I encourage perspective counseling student to research their program of choice and to actively participate in state, local, and national counseling professional organization.

What are you currently up to? Research, projects, publications, work, etc.

I am currently completing courses in facilitation skills and behavioral pathology. I am also a part-time student employee for Troy University working at the Alabama Department of Archives and History. I will maintain this position until I began my Practicum and Internships.
