Phase 4: Joints, Muscles, Bones
Sara Sunstein
Oakland, CA
Discover a fresh way of addressing tensions and pain in the body. Derived from Strain-CounterStrain aspect of Osteopathy, Ortho-Bionomy® is gentle for both the client and the one practicing it, so students learn ways to work smarter instead of harder, as well as how to meet/blend with someone without merging.
The focus during the class is truly understanding the principles and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy®, and how they underlie the techniques. To that end, the principles are highlighted throughout the class as students learn and practice techniques for each segment of the body: spine, pelvis, ribs, shoulders, and limbs.
By the end of the class, students can support ease and neuromuscular re-education in most parts of the body, and can feel better in their own bodies too!

Phase 4: Head, Neck and Pelvis
Barry Krost
Indianapolis, IN
Many of our clients come to us with pain in the head, neck and pelvis that can be difficult to resolve without superior skills. The head, neck and pelvis are made up of joints that have small ranges of motion that can be very challenging. In this Phase 4 workshop we learn to make our techniques more subtle and precise. We will explore how to fine-tune our experience of these joints and improve our skills to meet the needs of these structures and give relief to our clients through spontaneous self-corrections.
The workshop will include an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the joints in the head, neck and pelvis that we work with, a manual with the techniques and an opportunity to practice our Phase 4 skills together. We will also consider the effects of Phase 4 positioning on the ligaments and fascia of the head, neck and pelvis as we investigate dysfunction and reestablish healthy balance.

Phase 5 (8)
April 25 - 26, 2024
Phase 5 and the Reflexes
Luann Overmyer
Nashville, TN
Phase 5 Ortho-Bionomy is about having a conversation with the tissue, not an argument. The gentle and subtle approach of this work is especially appropriate for releasing severe, acute pain, chronic patterning, and for interrupting the mental and emotional fixated aspects that reinforce the tension patterns.
This class presents practical, gentle release techniques can seem almost magical in their effectiveness. Releases for psoas, pelvis, lumbars, coccyx, neck, shoulders, clavicle, ears, eyes, and jaw will be presented and practiced.
Refine your subtle palpatory listening skills
Clarify your capacity to more clearly track mental, emotional and physical aspects
Observe and work with tissue preferences in relationship to structural alignment
Reinforce the body’s wisdom not the patient’s storylines
Detect mood in the tissue
Use internal state shifts to influence and interrupt habituated storylines and holding patterns.

Jessica Sehested Mark
Asheville, NC
Phase 5 arises as the physical and energetic qualities of the body begin to blend in order for the system to self recognize and develop a deeper capacity to respond.
By incorporating a clear sense of right timing and presence, the practitioner learns functional skills to follow a client’s self-corrective movements as the stimulus for change and balance.
Expand the layers of perception by honing listening and sensing skills through hands-on techniques and embodying the art of doing nothing. Students will be able to increase proprioceptive awareness, understand the difference between guiding and following movement, and develop keen listening and observing skills.

Jessica Sehested Mark
Oakley, UT
Phase 6 class strengthens and tonifies our sensitivity, awareness, and communication through energetic relationships.
Students learn to identify, track, and work with energetic movement and shifts within themselves and the client to find comfort, promote self-correction, and increase natural responses of the whole body.
The application of 'not doing' is practiced to enable the client to resource their own self-healing reflexes. We will promote these natural, reflexive responses using concepts of energetic alignment and boundaries, holding space, recognizing patterns and movement of energy, and how attunement on the energetic level can affect the emotional and physical dimensions of the system.

Phase VII
Ursula Hofer and Christina Montes de Oca
ONLINE via Zoom
In Phase 7 we work through symbols, either in a client's presence or at long distance, to assist in self-correction.
The Phase 7 symbols (also called patterns) address all levels of human experience and allow practitioners a non-forceful, elegant way to connect with the client in a universal place.
They can be used to connect with a client individually and/or with a situation as a whole.

Phase VII: Energetic Connection from a Distance
Jim Berns
ONLINE via Zoom
16 hours- four days, 4 hours each, on July 11, 12, 16, 17, 2024 (Th, F, T, W)
Connection and healing can happen when we are near someone and also when we are far away.
What does it take to create that connection and healing from a distance? In this experiential 16 hour class we will explore:
• What do we feel in our body when we “tune in” to someone from far away?
• How can we soften and quiet ourselves to feel a shift or a response with someone from a distance?
• Specific techniques to sensitize our body to feel more subtle energy.
For some, this class is the next step in their understanding of Ortho-Bionomy. For others, it brings all that they have studied into a more concrete and clearer perspective.
This class is an elective for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International® Associate and Practitioner training programs and a requirement for the Advanced Practitioner training program.

In this Ortho-Bionomy class we use hands-on passive movements to assess, to release, and to integrate different areas of the body.
This is a technique that folds in seamlessly with any kind of bodywork you are already doing, and not only is it fun to do but it also feels so good!
Using the body’s innate wisdom, you will fine tune your ability to sense patterns in the movement of the tissue and the responses of the proprioceptive reflexes, and learn to use them in your practice.
This class is NCBTMB approved.

The techniques and concepts taught in this 2 day workshop add a dynamic dimension to the positional release techniques taught in "The Fundamentals of Ortho-Bionomy" classes.
In this class, we use passive movement to engage the client's self corrective potential.
We explore and reveal the patterns that their body has evolved, and by supporting in a nonjudgmental manner, we elicit recognition and shifts in these patterns.
This expands their range and ease of movement while integrating the changes with the rest of the system to give the body a renewed sense of self.
This class provides a bridge to the more subtle methods of Ortho-Bionomy.

Isometrics and Isotonics (8)
April 13 - 14, 2024
Isometric and Isotonics
Shaney Rockefeller
Bend, OR
Using Isometric and Isotonic resistance techniques encourages mobility and helps releases happen more readily in the body.br>
By enlisting the participation of a client, these techniques can assist the self-correction of postural imbalances and chronic tension patterns.
These techniques consist of slight restraint against a gently engaged muscle followed by the completion of the movement. As a practitioner, you can facilitate relaxing tense muscle patterns while encouraging toning of other muscles.
In this class, participants learn how the use of gentle resistance exercises with the client can help promote change from rigid patterns in the muscles and joints to greater mobility.

You will first learn and review release patterns of tension and apply the appropriate Isometrics.
We will work with Neck, Spine, Ribs, Scapula, Shoulder, Clavicle, Elbow, Wrist, Pelvis, Hip, Knee, and Ankle.
In addition, you will learn to release muscles of the back. Isometrics provide a fast and reliable means of resetting the neuromuscular mechanism and restoring normal resting length on both sides of the joint.
This begins the neurological re-education process, resets long-held patterns of dysfunction, actively engages the client in the process, and often ensures a more lasting response due to the depth of change within the nervous system.

Isometric and Isotonics

Nashville, TN
Isometric and isotonic techniques offer the opportunity to work with inefficient muscular tension patterns, tone muscle tissue that has become flaccid, and smooth out any bumps or jittery grabs within the muscle spindles.
By restraining movement or toning through movement while a muscle is engaged, we stimulate the nervous system and reciprocal inhibition, cue the self-correcting reflexes into action, and greater balance between opposing muscles or muscle groups is encouraged.
The process is remarkably quick, 8-10 seconds, and offers us a powerful tool to open stuck or contracted areas that do not respond to other techniques. The client is an active participant in this process, bringing self-awareness and recognition of the work.
In this class isometric and isotonic exercises will be taught and practiced offering relief from chronic pain, rigid muscle patterns, postural imbalances, and more.

Ethics & Emotions: Resolving Trauma and Cultivation Compassion
Sheri Covey
Portland, OR
This course covers the biological model of trauma and the somatic responses sustained by the body from emotional distress.
Ortho-bionomy gives us a unique opportunity to help the body resolve and let go of what the nervous system holds onto, offering both support and re-education and often resetting the autonomic responses.
The gateway for our approach is mainly through the fascia and its nociceptors, as it sends signals to the vagus nerve at 700 mph. Understanding the technical aspects of the psycho/somatic connection is paramount. It will give you an edge when it comes to compassionately being there for your clients as you engage with them on their journey towards resolution.

Denise Deig & Lynne Marotta
McCormick's Creek State Park, Spencer, IN
In this residential, we will explore and expand upon the theme of balance in all things. This includes finding our own internal equilibrium and from that perspective helping others achieve their optimal point of balance through the myriad of possibilities that Ortho-Bionomy® offers.
We will delve into the vagus and phrenic nerves influence, the Langer Lines ability to flow with stability and Vertical Spine’s gift to teaching us where we are now.
To achieve this dynamic neutral requires advanced skill development, as we hold the whole and the part, soft and bony tissues, and integration of the whole self in view as we treat.
On this middle path, we may find that neutrality offers a powerful place from which to move and function

Anatomy and Physiology (4)
March 29 - 30, 2024
Anatomy & Physiology 1
Charity Keyes
Portland, OR
This introductory course will cover the systems of the body and their function from the perspective of Ortho-Bionomy®.
As Ortho-Bionomy practitioners, we can address and support all parts and systems of the body in such a way that can only be described as "holistic." Even if you already have a handle on general anatomy, perhaps looking through the lens of a bodyworker of this magnitude will open your eyes to new possibilities and thought-provoking concepts of the many ways we address specific areas of dysfunction in the body.
We are excited to add this class to our repertoire. It precedes Anatomy & Physiology 2, which will include a deeper dive, further advancing your understanding.

Ortho-Bionomy is a gentle, non-invasive, system of healing that reminds the body of its natural ability to restore balance. We use light touch, gentle movements and place clients into positions of comfort to help trigger the bodies self-correcting reflexes.
Ortho-Bionomy helps relieve pain, increase range of motion, correct posture, creates a sense of relaxation and wellbeing.
In this class we will use Ortho-Bionomy techniques to explore the urinary tract and the reproductive system. We will work with the individual organs and look at their relationship to each other. We will also look at the surrounding soft tissues and the supporting structures. We will work with the kidneys, ureters, bladder, uterus, prostate, ovaries, spine, pelvis, and the pelvic floor.

Equine/Animal (3)
March 26 - April 23, 2024
Inside the Equine Thoracics
Susan Smith
ONLINE
In this 5-part online course we will explore the role of the thoracic spine in the locomotion and functionality of the equine, taking into consideration both the ridden and unridden horse.
The thoracic spine of the horse is particularly important as it serves as a bridge between the forehand and the hindquarter. It is also the part of the horse we sit on for riding. It plays a vital role in the forward propulsion of the animal.
Each thoracic vertebra anchors a set of ribs (17-18 in number) and forms a point of attachment for the heavy muscles that support the head, neck and shoulders.
Course topics will include: – relationships between the thoracic spine and other structures – common equine complaints – conditions of lordosis and kyphosis (swayback and hunter’s bump, for example) – pinpointing where to work – using bodywork to address saddle and tack fit concerns – observation of the spine with actual bones
Course will include homegrown as well as anatomy videos, handout, charts and photos. Students will be encouraged to submit photos and videos of horses they are working with.
This is an intro-to-intermediate course. NCBTMB approved provider. 16 CEs available with completion of this course.
This course is not a substitute for veterinary care.

Jessica Mark
ONLINE
In this study group, we will focus on honing your sensing and listening skills through a Phase 5 connection.
A central theme in this course will be learning to perceive the differences between following a repeating pattern of movement in Phase 5 versus facilitating a response or new patterns of awareness through the nervous system.
Some of the elements we will cover include:
Increase proprioceptive awareness and comfort in not doing as a Practitioner to allow the wisdom of the client’s body to respond
Recognize right timing of a Phase 5 release and practice the art of being
Recognize and explore techniques and resources to come into relationship with tissue that may hold unresolved trauma
Explore each reflex (Rebound, Recoil, Follow-On, Ongoing Action, Regret/Remembered Emotional Response, Ciny Time Zone, Volery, and Space Between the Notes) through developing an awareness of sensing them energetically and physically in our own bodies
Discern the options of waiting for a reflex to respond in its right timing and introducing a reflex to elicit a change in a pattern

Join us in Santa Fe for this enriching, deepening, and inspiring experience! For more info, read the ITP Handbook at www.ortho-bionomy.org. Click on "Instructor Training Program" under "Training Programs".
Please note that in order to apply to this program, you must have completed 375 hours of the Adv. Practitioner Program. Also be aware (see ITP Handbook p. 34) that only one bench assist may be completed for credit before the first ITS with a registered instructor who has a minimum of one year active teaching experience.

An approved application to enter the ITP. The latest date your application can be submitted into SOBI in time for this ITS is Dec. 15th, 2023. If your application to the Instructor Training Program is not approved, you will be issued a full refund of your deposit. |
