Phase 5 (3)
June 10 - 11, 2023
Phase 5
Lynne Marotta
Nashville, TN
The focus of Phase Five is to move to a more subtle level of awareness of the practice and principle of Ortho-Bionomy.
Specific techniques develop and increase the student's understanding and proprioceptive sensitivity to the self-corrective movements initiated by the client.
Through the practice of observing, following and supporting subtle movement patterns, muscular tension is released, range of motion may be increased and pain may be reduced.
In Phase Five, students are encouraged to do less and let the client be the guide for their exploration of change.

Phase 5: Sensing Movement and Fluidity Within Stillness
Sara Sunstein
Berkeley, CA
Phase Five focuses on a subtle level of awareness, inviting a somatic conversation of listening, gently engaging, and allowing the self-corrective movements initiated by the client.
It is valuable for working with areas of pain that can’t tolerate movement, different layers of tissue, stimulating and strengthening self-healing reflexes, and “connecting the dots” between different body parts.
Doing Phase 5, we deepen our practical understanding of Dr. Arthur Pauls’ comment, “The techniques are the philosophy made manifest.”

Posture and Post Techniques (4)
August 19 - 20, 2023
Posture and Post Techniques
Sara Sunstein
Berkeley, CA
Ortho-Bionomy® uses direct observation and sensory experience to discover how postures enhance—or depress—our function, wholeness, and aliveness. Instead of judging or imposing a new set of tensions upon another, we seek to release inefficient holding patterns, and encourage innate healthy structure to become habit.
Integration techniques (also called Post-techniques) are gentle, rhythmic movements to promote and deepen the body’s understanding of increased mobility and releases that occurred during a session.
The techniques are also used for assessment or freeing an area before doing specific work. Many of these techniques focus on vertebral individuation, however, there are techniques for other body parts as well.

Trauma Informed Care - Embodiment of Ethics
Richard Valasek
Atlanta, GA
We will be looking at Ortho-Bionomy an "experiment in ethics", as a moral philosophy, where one might turn their attention inward to the body for clarity in ethical decision making...especially when the lines get fuzzy.
There will also be plenty of attention to Self Care for the practitioner and how the care of the Self extends to the care of the community.
Ethics and aesthetics will be explored along with the importance of continuing skill improvement as a requirement for the ethics of care.

Practitioner Training Seminar: “Being with Integrity, Sharing with Clarity”
Jim Berns
Davis, CA
Every time you talk about Ortho-Bionomy, whether you are interacting with a client, someone you meet, or a friend, you are presenting yourself professionally and giving an “introductory talk.”
Your feelings and excitement about Ortho-Bionomy come across in your words, energy, and body language. To help you clearly and easily communicate about Ortho-Bionomy, this class will help you clarify:
What is Ortho-Bionomy?
What does an Ortho-Bionomy session look like?
,br>How does Ortho-Bionomy feel?
What are the benefits of getting an Ortho-Bionomy session?
This Demonstration Skills Class will give you the confidence, knowledge, and experience to embody “being” Ortho-Bionomy, not just talking about it.
Students will practice together in a safe, open, and supportive atmosphere. Whether you are a beginning student or finishing your practitioner program, this class can be an incredible experience!

Self Care for Resilience and Ease
Jessica Mark
Lincoln, NE
As bodyworkers, our self care can easily drop to the bottom of the priority list. We can often feel burn out, overwhelm, and/or resentment creep in when we least expect it. Our capacity for sustainability in our lives and within our career can be enhanced by understanding our relationship to our autonomic nervous system.
Practices to help bring awareness and understanding to your unique nervous system to work toward increased vitality and ease will be the focus of this class. Through the principles of Ortho-Bionomy, we will learn how to recognize and engage the resources within our own bodies using safe, comfortable positioning and gentle movement exercises.
This class is excellent for anyone wishing to relieve pain, gain adaptability, and increase ease of movement in the body.
Objective of this course include:
Learning options for restorative practices and breath awareness exercises to tone and support the parasympathetic nervous system.
Exploring Ortho-Bionomy self care techniques to listen for the body’s natural self-corrective response.
Understanding the anatomy of stress in relation to our enteric nervous system, vagus nerve, and adaptability of our autonomic nervous system. Identifying how stress inhabits in the body, ways stress can metabolize, and how ease is sensed physiologically.
Exploring techniques to provide options for movement and choice through the fluid system, support structural integrity and boundaries through the skeletal system, and cultivate space through awareness of energetic relationships.
Understanding the physiology of how the systems of our body work together to store and release energy.

Visceral
Mike Miller
Deerfield Beach, FL
Ortho-Bionomy® - Above the Dome- Thoracic visceral In this class we will explore the bony structures, organs, and the soft tissue; that help hold the structure together or pull on each other causing misalignments and dysfunctions.
We will be using an Ortho-Bionomy® approach to help bring balance to the Thoracic cavity and throat (Ribs, Intercostal muscles, Diaphragm, Trachea and Bronchi) organs (Lungs, Pleura, Heart, Thyroid) and bring them into relationship with their surroundings.
Ortho-Bionomy® - Below the Dome- Abdominal Visceral This class presents an Ortho-Bionomy® approach to restoring the functional movements of the abdomen and the organs of digestion.
We will look at the viscera as a community within itself and explore how its movements extend out into the surrounding areas. In this class, we will explore the sphincters, liver, gallbladder, stomach, intestines and more. We will learn to palpate and sense the organ themselves and how they relate to each other. We will also work with the bony structures and soft tissues that support them.
When I first took this visceral class in 2007. I remember my instructor Darlene Smith saying, “If the body is not changing, we need to look at the viscera.” I spent six years assisting her as we discovered the potential of the body to heal and how the viscera played an important role. Did you know the liver can cause right shoulder, neck and breathing issues? Did you know the mesentery root can cause issues with the right sacroiliac joint and prolapse of the uterus and bladder? Did you know the large intestine can cause hip & low back pain, and sciatica? These are just a few examples of how the viscera can affect the structure of the body. The viscera can also affect each other causing poor digestion, nutrient absorption and removal of toxic substances and wastes.
Come join us and learn how the viscera play a vital role in our health and well being. Ortho-Bionomy® - Pelvic Visceral In this class we will use Ortho-Bionomy® to explore the urinary tract and the reproductive system.
We will work with the individual organs and look at their relationship to each other. We will also look at the surrounding soft tissues and the supporting structures.
We will work with the kidneys, ureters, bladder, uterus, prostate, ovaries, spine, pelvis, and the pelvic floor. “When we work with the pelvis. We are addressing the very core of our stability. Pelvic stability has a major impact on how we meet the earth and walk in the world on a daily basis as well as enhancing total body health”. Darlene Smith

This 3 hour study group explores the hyoid and its attachments.
The hyoid bone is an essential element to swallowing, anchors multiple muscles in the region of the mouth and throat, and is the only bone in the human body not to have an articulation with any other bone in the body.
Making sounds, coughing, breathing, moving the tongue, avoiding choking, and anything to do with the larynx are all tied in with the function of the hyoid bone.
