TRUSTEE Constituency: School Career Counselors and Specialists (2026-29)
Erik M. Hines, PhD, CCC
Erik M. Hines, Ph.D., CCC, is a Professor of Counseling at George Mason University. Erik’s research agenda focuses on the postsecondary readiness and career development of Black men and boys across various contexts (P-12, community college, 4- year college/university) and critically examines how high impact programming shape their educational and career outcomes and experiences. Additionally, Erik studies the career exploration of educationally vulnerable students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Erik has over 100 scholarly publications, including five edited books, Equity-Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions: An American Imperative; Black Males in Secondary and Postsecondary Education: Teaching, Mentoring, Advising and Counseling; In Pursuit of Academics: Engaging Black Males in P-12 Schools; The American Dream 2.0: Recognizing the Academic Gifts and Talents of Black Students; and Counseling Black Men and Boys with Excellence: Exploring Career, Clinical, and School Contexts. His research has appeared in notable peer-reviewed counseling journals such as the Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Journal for Specialists in Group Work, and Professional School Counseling. Moreover, he has served or is serving as guest editor for several special issues including the forthcoming special issue titled, Black Men and Boys: Career Development Promises and Pitfalls, slated to be published in the Career Development Quarterly journal.
Erik was on the top 200 education scholars in the 2025 RHSU Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings in Education Week. Also, Erik is a proud American Counseling Association (ACA) Fellow, recipient of the 2025 Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Counseling Vision and Innovation Award, an International Colloquium on Black Males in Education Warrior Awardee, and recipient of the Al Dye Research Award from the Association for Specialists in Group Work.
Erik has worked in urban schools, Trio programs, as well as college access and career readiness initiatives. Additionally, he has served as the treasurer of the American Counseling Association and co-chair of the NCDA Technology committee. Erik’s goals include: a) ensuring the SCCS constituency receives the latest information, resources, and tools needed to effectively facilitate and implement career development in P-12 schools and b) giving voice to SCCS constituents by inviting them to be featured on NCDA’s various media outlets (e.g., podcasts, journals, etc.) where they can share their experiences working in schools with youth and young adults as school career counselors, practitioners, and specialists about their implementation of career development.
