OABA is Committed to Improve Water Quality in Western Lake Erie
In the wake of Toledo’s water issue, where more than 400,000 northwest Ohio residents lost public water due to the presence of a toxin created by algae blooms in nearby Lake Erie, many news reports have suggested agricultural runoff in the surrounding areas may have been a contributing factor.
Ohio agribusinesses must communicate a unified message, explaining the ways in which farmers, and the agriculture community, are committed to the long-term improvement of the lake’s water quality. It’s important to educate the public, elected officials and media on what the industry has already been doing to alleviate the problem.
The Ohio AgriBusiness Association believes the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program, which is aligned with the 4R Nutrient Stewardship initiative, is one of the many projects incorporating the 4Rs and providing positive news regarding the industry’s dedication to improving water quality in Lake Erie.
